FHR Booking Missing Perks? How to Fix It Before Your Stay

Updated

6 min read

Step 1: diagnose what you actually booked

Most missing-perks cases are a rate mix-up, not a glitch. Amex Travel sells three things that look alike at checkout: regular hotel rates, The Hotel Collection rates, and Fine Hotels + Resorts rates. Only the FHR rate carries breakfast, the $100 credit, and the guaranteed 4pm checkout, and hotels can appear in more than one bucket.

Open your trip on amextravel.com or in the Amex app. An FHR booking states Fine Hotels + Resorts on the reservation and lists the benefits. If yours says The Hotel Collection, you have the lighter package with a two-night minimum. If it says neither, you booked a standard rate with no program benefits at all.

Step 2: if you booked the wrong rate

Check the cancellation terms on your booking. Most FHR and many Amex Travel rates are flexible until a few days before arrival. If you are inside the free cancellation window, the clean fix is to cancel and rebook the correct FHR rate. Do the rebooking first if availability is tight, then cancel the old one.

If you prepaid a nonrefundable rate, call Amex Travel anyway. Agents can sometimes convert or make goodwill adjustments, especially close to the booking date, but there is no entitlement to it.

Watch out:Booking the same hotel through the hotel's own site or a third party can never be converted into an FHR booking. FHR benefits only attach to FHR rates booked through Amex Travel.

Step 3: if the rate is right but perks are not showing

  • check_circleCall Amex Travel or the Platinum Travel line and ask them to confirm the booking is coded as FHR and to re-transmit the reservation details to the property.
  • check_circleEmail the hotel with your confirmation number and ask them to confirm the reservation shows Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits: breakfast for two, the $100 credit, and 4pm checkout.
  • check_circleSave that email reply. A written confirmation from the hotel resolves 99 percent of check-in disputes before they start.
  • check_circleRecheck 48 hours before arrival if you booked far in advance, since reservation systems occasionally drop flags on rate changes or room moves.

Step 4: protect yourself at the hotel

Bring your Amex Travel confirmation showing the FHR benefits. At check-in, ask the agent to verify each benefit on the reservation. If the hotel still cannot see the FHR coding, ask the desk to call their Amex Travel support line, or call Amex yourself from the lobby. Do not wait until checkout to raise it.

If a benefit is ultimately not delivered, keep your folio and dispute through Amex Travel afterward. Amex funds and polices this program, and documented cases of undelivered benefits are generally made right.

Prevent it next time

  • check_circleScreenshot the rate page showing the Fine Hotels + Resorts label and benefits before you pay.
  • check_circleVerify the confirmation email lists the benefits within minutes of booking, while cancellation is painless.
  • check_circleBook prepaid with your Platinum card when you want the statement credit, and confirm the charge shows as Amex Travel.
  • check_circleFor high-stakes trips like honeymoons, add the pre-arrival email to the hotel as standard practice.

Common questions

My confirmation email does not mention any benefits. Is my booking broken?expand_more

Not necessarily, formats vary. The reservation detail page on amextravel.com is authoritative. If it shows Fine Hotels + Resorts with the benefit list, you are fine. If it does not, start the fix steps.

Who do I call, Amex or the hotel?expand_more

Amex Travel first, since they own the booking and can re-send it to the property. Then the hotel to confirm receipt. The combination of both, in that order, resolves nearly every case.

Can the hotel refuse FHR benefits at check-in?expand_more

Not for a properly coded FHR booking, these benefits are contractual between the hotel and Amex. If a front desk refuses, ask for a manager, then call Amex Travel from the property.

I was promised an upgrade and did not get one. Is that a missing perk?expand_more

No. Upgrades and noon check-in are when-available benefits, so an unavailable upgrade is not a breach. Breakfast, the $100 credit, Wi-Fi, and 4pm checkout are the enforceable ones.

My statement credit has not posted after the stay. Should I worry?expand_more

Give it time first: Amex says up to 90 days. Confirm the booking was prepaid through Amex Travel on an eligible Platinum card and within your semiannual window, then call Amex if it still has not appeared.
