How Do I Confirm My FHR Benefits Before Check-In?

Updated

6 min read

Where your benefits should appear

When you book an FHR rate, the benefits are part of the rate itself, not an add-on. Your confirmation email from Amex Travel and the reservation in your Amex Travel account should both spell out the benefit list for that specific hotel, including how that property delivers the $100 credit (for example, dining only or spa included).

If your confirmation does not mention Fine Hotels + Resorts anywhere, stop and check what you actually booked. Amex Travel also sells regular rates and The Hotel Collection rates, and those carry different or no benefits.

Three checks to run before the stay

  • check_circleOpen your booking on amextravel.com or in the Amex app and confirm the rate is labeled Fine Hotels + Resorts with the benefits listed.
  • check_circleTwo to three days before arrival, email or call the hotel directly, give your confirmation number, and ask them to verify the reservation is flagged as an FHR booking with breakfast for two and the property credit attached. Hotels see these bookings in their system with the program rate code.
  • check_circleIf the hotel cannot see it, call Amex Travel (the Platinum Travel line on the back of your card) and have them re-send the reservation details to the property.
Tip:The pre-arrival email is also the right moment to mention a special occasion and request your upgrade preference. Upgrades are assigned when available at arrival, and a note in the file never hurts.

What to ask at the front desk

Check-in is where benefits become real. A 30-second script covers everything.

  • check_circleCan you confirm my booking shows the Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits?
  • check_circleHow does breakfast work here: restaurant, set menu, or a fixed credit amount per day?
  • check_circleHow is the $100 property credit applied, and which outlets count?
  • check_circleIs a room upgrade available today? My rate includes one when available.
  • check_circlePlease note my guaranteed 4pm checkout on the reservation.

During the stay and at checkout

Charge eligible spending, like dinner or spa, to the room so the $100 credit has something to offset. At checkout, review the folio line by line before you leave the desk. The credit should appear as a deduction, and breakfast charges for two should be zeroed out or covered up to the hotel's stated amount.

If something is missing, ask the desk to correct it on the spot. It is far easier to fix a folio in person than by phone a week later.

If benefits were missed after checkout

Keep your final folio and your Amex Travel confirmation showing the promised benefits. Call Amex Travel, explain which benefit was not delivered, and they will work with the property. If you prepaid and are expecting the semiannual hotel statement credit on a Platinum card, allow up to 90 days for it to post to your statement.

Common questions

Does the hotel always know my booking is FHR?expand_more

Almost always, because FHR reservations arrive with a program rate code. But transmission glitches happen, which is why a quick pre-arrival email asking the hotel to confirm the FHR flag is worth the two minutes.

Do I need to show my Platinum card at check-in?expand_more

Bring the card you booked with. Some hotels ask for it for incidentals, and it avoids any question about eligibility for the benefits attached to the rate.

What if the hotel says breakfast is only a small credit?expand_more

FHR breakfast must be worth at least $60 per room per day for two people. If the hotel offers less, point to your Amex confirmation, and if they will not budge, take the folio issue to Amex Travel afterward.

Is 4pm checkout really guaranteed?expand_more

Yes, guaranteed 4pm checkout is the one availability-independent benefit besides breakfast, the credit, and Wi-Fi. Have the desk note it at check-in so housekeeping is not knocking at 11am.

Can I confirm my upgrade before arrival?expand_more

No. FHR upgrades are assigned upon arrival when available. If a confirmed upgrade at booking matters to you, an advisor program like Hyatt Prive confirms upgrades within 24 hours of booking instead.
