How Delta Vacations mile payments actually work

Delta Vacations is the most flexible of the group. You can apply SkyMiles to any slice of the package price, flights, hotel, rides, and activities, and combine miles with a card for the rest. There is no minimum, no blackout dates, and the unusual part, redeeming does not switch off earning: packages still earn miles and Medallion Qualification Dollars on the eligible package value.

The catch sits in the cancellation fine print. Miles you spend on a package are not returned as miles if you cancel. They come back as a Delta Vacations voucher, minus any cancellation penalties. If you might cancel, that converts flexible miles into operator credit, which is a real downgrade.

American's version: small minimum, broad coverage

American Airlines Vacations lets AAdvantage members apply miles starting at just 1,000 toward a package, and explicitly allows miles on the non flight portion, hotel and resort stays, car rentals, transfers, tours, and activities. That makes it a reasonable dumping ground for a small orphan balance that could never buy a flight on its own.

Value per mile on package redemptions is typically fixed and modest compared with a well priced award flight. Treat it as a discount mechanism, not a maximization play.

United and Southwest: the split booking workaround

United Vacations states it cannot redeem MileagePlus miles toward a package. Its own suggested workaround: book the flight as a normal award through United, then buy a land only package for the hotel and extras. Southwest is the same shape, Rapid Rewards points cannot pay for a package, though package flights earn points.

Before you split, price both paths. Package pricing sometimes bakes the discount into the flight plus hotel combination, so a land only package plus award flight can cost more in cash than the bundle would have. Run the numbers with the miles valued at what you would otherwise use them for.

Tip:Splitting the booking also splits responsibility. With an award flight plus land only package, the airline owns flight problems and the operator owns hotel problems. Keep both confirmation numbers handy.

What to watch at checkout

  • check_circleConfirm what happens to your miles on cancellation before you slide the miles slider. Voucher back is not the same as miles back.
  • check_circleCheck whether bonus or promotional miles from the package count toward elite status. On Delta Vacations, bonus miles do not count toward Medallion or Million Miler status.
  • check_circleRedemptions are for new bookings only. You typically cannot apply miles retroactively to a package you already paid for.
  • check_circleVery large redemptions may not clear online. Delta Vacations caps online bookings at 999,999 miles and routes bigger ones to the phone.
  • check_circleAllow time for earned miles to post after travel, Delta Vacations quotes up to 8 weeks.

Common questions

Do I still earn miles if I pay for a package with miles?expand_more

On Delta Vacations, yes, packages earn miles and Medallion Qualification Dollars even when paid partly or fully with miles. That is unusual, on most airlines redeeming means not earning, so check the operator's earning rules before assuming.

Can I use miles for just the flight and pay cash for the hotel?expand_more

On Delta Vacations you choose how many miles to apply to the total, so effectively yes. On United and Southwest the only route is booking the flight as a separate award and buying a hotel only package.

Is paying for a package with miles good value?expand_more

Usually it is a fixed, modest rate per mile, below what a well chosen award flight returns. It makes sense for small balances, for travelers who want simplicity, or when cash is the constraint. It rarely beats saving miles for expensive flights.

What happens to my miles if I cancel the package?expand_more

On Delta Vacations, miles are not refunded as miles. You receive a Delta Vacations voucher for the value, minus cancellation penalties. Read your operator's cancellation terms before spending miles you might want back.

Can I use a companion certificate or flight credit inside a package?expand_more

Policies vary and many certificates are valid only on standalone flight bookings. Call the operator before booking and ask specifically whether your certificate or credit type can be applied to a package fare.
