Where did your leftover Spirit flight credit balance go?

Updated

5 min read

Why there may be no leftover balance at all

Spirit credits were valid for a single use with no remaining value afterward. Published guidance gave the exact scenario travelers kept hitting: apply a 120 dollar credit to a 90 dollar flight and the 30 dollar remainder could not be used later.

So if you used part of a credit while Spirit was flying and never saw the rest again, that was the policy working as written, not a display bug. The redemption consumed the whole credit regardless of the trip price.

How to reconstruct your number today

Start with the credit email and note the issued amount. Then find the booking where you partially used it and note that trip's total from its confirmation email. If the redemption consumed the credit under the single use rule, your economic loss is still real money you paid Spirit and never got value for.

Write the math down plainly: amount paid, value received, difference. That difference, supported by the two emails and your card statement, is what you can assert in a claim.

Watch out:Do not guess amounts on a proof of claim. Claim what your documents show. Inflated or undocumented claims are the ones that get challenged.

Filing for the value you can prove

  • check_circleGather the credit email, both booking confirmations, and card statements.
  • check_circleFile a proof of claim through Epiq, Spirit's claims agent, starting at spiritrestructuring.com or dm.epiq11.com.
  • check_circleAttach the documents showing the credit amount and any unused portion.
  • check_circleNote the reality check from case reporting: guests are unsecured creditors near the bottom of the payout order, so treat any recovery as a bonus, not a plan.
  • check_circleIf the original purchase is recent enough, also ask your card issuer about a services-not-delivered dispute.

Common questions

I used part of my credit and Spirit kept the rest. Was that legal?expand_more

It was Spirit's published single use policy: one redemption per credit with no residual value. Whether you can recover the remainder now runs through the bankruptcy claim process.

Is there any live tool to look up a Spirit credit balance in 2026?expand_more

No. The airline's account tools went offline with the May 2, 2026 shutdown and support pages redirect to the restructuring site. Your emails are the record.

I never used my credit at all. Do I have a balance?expand_more

You have a documented claim for the full issued amount, assuming it had not expired before the shutdown. File it with the credit email as evidence.

My credit expired in early 2026 before the shutdown. Can I still claim it?expand_more

An expired credit is a weaker claim since Spirit's terms ended its value before the wind down. You can still document it when filing, but set expectations accordingly.

What if I cannot find the credit email anymore?expand_more

Search your inbox for the six character confirmation code from the canceled trip, and for words like reservation credit. Your card statement plus the original booking confirmation can also establish what you paid.
