If I upgrade two travelers with PlusPoints, do they clear together?

Being on the same reservation doesn't guarantee they clear together

A shared confirmation number does not automatically mean two passengers move as a single unit on the upgrade waitlist. United's system evaluates each named traveler by their own elite status tier and the fare class they're individually ticketed on. If both travelers hold identical status and fare, they usually end up next to each other on the list and clear together. If not, they're ranked separately.

The elite member's own PlusPoints can cover a companion

A Premier Platinum or 1K member can use their own PlusPoints balance to request an upgrade for a companion traveling with them, and in some cases for a traveler who isn't even on the same reservation. The points come out of the elite member's account regardless of whose name is on the seat.

Using your PlusPoints for someone else doesn't automatically give that traveler your elite-tier priority on the waitlist, though. Priority is still generally based on the traveler being upgraded, not the member who paid for it, so a non-elite companion upgraded with your points may clear later than you would on your own.

What splits a party across cabins

  • check_circleOne traveler holds a higher elite tier than the other.
  • check_circleThe two travelers are ticketed on different fare classes, even on the same route and date.
  • check_circleOnly enough seats open in the upgrade cabin for one traveler by departure.
  • check_circleThe requests were submitted at different times, and only one clears before check-in.

How to improve the odds of clearing together

What helps a party clear together versus what can split it

FactorHelps clear togetherCan cause a split
Elite tierBoth travelers hold the same tierOne traveler outranks the other
Fare classBooked on the identical fare codeDifferent fares, even same cabin
Request timingRequested together, same timeRequested separately, days apart
Seats availableTwo or more open in target cabinOnly one seat opens up
Tip:If it matters that you sit together, book the identical fare class for both travelers and submit the upgrade request for both at the same time.

If they don't clear together

United doesn't guarantee it will hold or reverse a partial upgrade to keep a couple or family together in one cabin. If only one traveler clears and you'd rather stay together, you generally need to contact United and ask whether the confirmed traveler can be moved back or the request adjusted, rather than expecting that to happen automatically.

Common questions

Can I use my PlusPoints to upgrade someone not traveling with me?expand_more

In many cases yes, an elite member can apply their PlusPoints to upgrade another traveler's flight even if it's a separate reservation, though the exact process can require calling United rather than doing it online.

Does the elite member need to also be upgraded for the companion request to work?expand_more

Not necessarily. You can apply your PlusPoints toward a companion's upgrade without upgrading your own seat, though eligibility can depend on your specific status tier.

Why did my spouse clear the upgrade waitlist and I didn't, even on the same reservation?expand_more

Most likely a difference in fare class or elite tier between the two of you. Each traveler is evaluated individually on the waitlist.

If we're split, can we ask United to hold the seat until we can sit together?expand_more

You can ask, but United isn't obligated to delay a confirmed upgrade for one traveler to wait for the other. Contact customer service as soon as you notice the split to see what options exist.
