Spirit flight credit vs refund: what are your options in 2026?

Where things stand after the May 2026 shutdown

Spirit ceased all flights on May 2, 2026 during its second Chapter 11 case. Its first bankruptcy came in November 2024, and the second filing followed in August 2025 before the wind down.

For canceled shutdown-era flights paid with a credit or debit card, Spirit processed refunds automatically, including add-on fees paid before May 2. Bookings paid with credits, vouchers, or Free Spirit points were not refunded. Spirit said compensation for those would be determined later through the bankruptcy court process.

How the credit versus refund choice used to work

Before the shutdown, the rules followed a standard pattern. Cancel within 24 hours of booking with the flight at least 7 days away and you got a full refund to your original payment method. Cancel voluntarily after that and you got a Reservation Credit usable only with Spirit.

When the airline canceled or significantly changed your flight, you were entitled to a cash refund under federal consumer protections, even on a nonrefundable fare. Agents often offered a credit first, sometimes with a sweetener, but the refund right was yours to invoke.

What happened to people who accepted credits

Credit holders became unsecured creditors. In an airline liquidation, remaining assets go to secured lenders and priority creditors first, and reporting on the Spirit case notes customers sit near the bottom of that list. Recovery, if any, may be partial and take months or years.

That is the whole tradeoff in one sentence: a refund was certain money, while a credit was a promise from a company that had already filed for bankruptcy twice.

Tip:For any airline in the news for financial distress, treat a cancellation as a refund event. You can always rebook with the same airline using the refunded cash if it survives.

What to do now if you are holding a Spirit credit

  • check_circleFile a proof of claim through Spirit's claims agent, Epiq. Instructions are posted at spiritrestructuring.com, the official site that Spirit's old support pages now redirect to.
  • check_circleGather the credit issuance email, original booking confirmation, and card statement. Claim the documented dollar value.
  • check_circleAsk your card issuer about disputing the original charge for services not delivered. The baseline window is 60 days from the statement showing the charge, but issuers often extend it when a merchant fails.
  • check_circleIf you bought replacement flights at higher prices, keep those receipts. They may support a claim in the proceedings.
  • check_circleCheck older travel insurance policies for financial default coverage. Policies bought after the November 2024 filing usually exclude Spirit as a known event.

The rule of thumb to carry to other airlines

When the airline cancels, ask for the refund by name and decline the credit unless it comes with real added value and the airline is financially healthy. When you cancel voluntarily, expect a credit and check its expiration and reuse rules before you rely on it.

Also check how the credit clock runs. Most airline credits expire based on the issue date, not your travel date, and the terms in your cancellation email control. Spirit's collapse turned thousands of quietly expiring credits into worthless paper, which is the strongest argument for cash you will ever see.

Common questions

My shutdown-canceled flight was paid by card. Do I need to file a claim?expand_more

Probably not for the fare. Spirit processed automatic refunds to cards for flights canceled in the shutdown, including prepaid bags and seats. Watch your statement for several business days, and dispute the charge with your card issuer if the refund never lands.

I accepted a credit instead of a refund last year. Can I undo that?expand_more

Not directly. Your path now is a bankruptcy proof of claim for the credit value, plus a possible card dispute on the original purchase if your issuer allows it this long after the charge.

Were rescue fares a substitute for a refund?expand_more

No. United, Delta, JetBlue, and Southwest sold reduced one-way fares around 200 dollars to travelers with a Spirit confirmation and proof of purchase, but only for a limited period after May 2, 2026, and you still paid for them separately.

Do Free Spirit points or Saver$ Club fees get refunded?expand_more

No. Spirit said points cannot be transferred to another program and Saver$ Club membership fees will not be refunded. Both are handled, if at all, through the bankruptcy process.

Is there a deadline to file a bankruptcy claim?expand_more

Claim deadlines, called bar dates, are set by the court and posted by the claims agent. Check spiritrestructuring.com or the Epiq case page at dm.epiq11.com for the current deadline rather than relying on secondhand dates.
