When does an airline card's free checked bag pay for the fee?
Updated
6 min readThe formula
Annual bag savings equals bag fee, times flight legs, times people covered, times trips per year. If that number beats the card's annual fee, the card pays for itself before you count miles or any other perk.
Bag fees rose again in 2026: United now charges 45 dollars prepaid or 50 at the airport for the first bag, Delta charges 45 dollars, and American charges 35 dollars prepaid online or 40 at the airport. Use the fee you would actually pay.
Break-even by card, at 2026 bag prices
Round trips per year needed to cover the fee with first bag savings alone
| Card | Annual fee | Who gets free bags | Solo break-even | Couple break-even |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select | $99, waived year one | You plus up to 4 companions, first bag, domestic AA | About 2 round trips | 1 round trip |
| United Explorer | $150, waived year one | You plus 1 companion, first bag | 2 round trips | 1 round trip |
| Delta SkyMiles Gold | $150 | You plus up to 8 companions on the reservation, first bag | 2 round trips | 1 round trip |
| United Quest | $350 | You plus 1 companion, first and second bags | 2 to 4 round trips depending on bags | 1 to 2 round trips |
Worked examples
Solo United flyer, two round trips a year, one bag each way: 45 dollars times 4 legs equals 180 dollars saved, against the Explorer's 150 dollar fee. Thin but positive, and the card's other perks, like two United Club passes, push it clearly over.
Couple on American, one round trip a year with two first bags: 35 dollars times 2 bags times 2 legs equals 140 dollars saved against a 99 dollar fee. Positive in year two onward, and the fee is waived in year one.
Family of four on Delta, one round trip with four bags: 45 dollars times 4 bags times 2 legs equals 360 dollars against the Delta Gold's 150 dollar fee. The bag perk alone more than doubles the fee back.
Fine print that changes the math
- check_circleUnited requires you to buy the ticket with the card for the bag benefit to apply.
- check_circleDelta ties the benefit to your SkyMiles number being on the reservation, and it covers up to nine passengers on the same reservation as the primary cardholder.
- check_circleAmerican's benefit covers domestic AA itineraries for you and up to four companions on the same reservation.
- check_circleCompanions must be on the same reservation; separately booked travel companions get nothing.
- check_circleSecond bags are not covered by entry level cards; among these, only the United Quest tier covers two bags.
Lounge and upgrade extras: count them at your real usage
Higher tier airline cards ask you to justify fees with lounge access and upgrade help, not just bags. The United Club Infinite at 695 dollars includes full United Club membership and two free checked bags; that fee only works if you would have paid for a Club membership anyway or you fly United enough that lounge visits and second bags genuinely accumulate.
The clean way to decide: cover the fee with bag math alone at your realistic trip count. If bags alone cannot get you at least halfway to the fee, be very skeptical that soft perks will close the gap.
Common questions
How much is a checked bag on United, Delta, and American in 2026?expand_more
First bag on domestic routes: United 45 dollars prepaid or 50 at the airport, Delta 45 dollars, American 35 dollars prepaid online or 40 at the airport. All three raised fees in spring 2026.
Do airline card bag benefits work on basic economy fares?expand_more
Often yes on the big carriers, but rules differ by airline and change, so confirm the card's current terms for basic economy before counting the savings.
Does the free bag apply if someone else buys my ticket?expand_more
On United the ticket must be purchased with your card, so no. On Delta the key is your SkyMiles number on the reservation. Check your card's specific condition.
I fly twice a year and never check bags. Should I get an airline card?expand_more
Probably not for the bag benefit, since it is worth zero to you. Only priority boarding, lounge passes, or a strong welcome offer could justify the fee, and usually a general travel card serves you better.
Is the United Quest worth it over the Explorer for bags?expand_more
Only if you and a companion actually check second bags. Quest covers first and second bags for two people and adds a 200 dollar annual United travel credit against its 350 dollar fee, so heavy packers and Quest credits users come out ahead.
