How to think about a transfer bonus

  • checkA 30% bonus to a 1.5¢/pt program means your points are worth 1.95¢ — but only if you have an actual redemption that uses them. Don't transfer speculatively.
  • checkHotel transfers are usually trap deals. Hilton's 1¢ effective value means even with a 100% bonus you're only at 0.5¢/pt — worse than cash on most stays.
  • checkAirline transfers vary wildly. ANA, Avios, Aeroplan, and Air France-KLM Flying Blue often beat 2¢/pt before any bonus. Do the cash math first.
  • checkBonuses are advertised, not guaranteed: capacity controls and fuel surcharges can erode the headline rate. Search award space before transferring.
